Using GCzII without violating GS TOS

Post  Andronicus on Thu May 27, 2010 11:30 am

GroundSpeak has said that GCzII's screen scraping violates the TOS (we can argue that in another thread). Here is how to use it without violating the TOS:

-Download your PQ GPX files to your phone.
-Import the GPX into GCzII. From the main screen select Menu>Cache Lists>Import GPX
-once the list has imported, use the Save Cache List option to save for future use.

I would like it if you could get GCzII to download all the static maps without re-downloading the cache page. But that is a topic for the feature request page.

I guess I should add that if you log your finds directly from GCzII, GroundSpeak would say that that was also a violation of the TOS. They way to get around this would be to use the field notes function, then upload the field notes file to Geocaching.com. The following quote from Tom on how this is done

Hi Paulloft

I have not tested the feature recently.
But it worked before.

1) Connect your device to PC via ActiveSync.
2) Copy "FieldNotes.txt" from device to PC.
3) Open GC.com web site (PC).
http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx
4) Upload "FieldNotes.txt"

You will see the result.
So, you don't need to post one by one (if it still works)

thanks

Tom

After uploading the file, the field notes will not appear on GC.com immediatly. It will take a few minutes, so be patiant (I know, GCzII users arn't used to being patiant, but you will have to for this).

Does anyone know if you can just upload the FieldNotes.txt file to http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx strait from your phone?

UPDATE:
I just tried this with Opera 10. Worked like a charm. So you can skip a few steps and upload the FieldNotes.txt file directly to http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx from your phone. If you do this alot, make a bookmark, or scan this pic with i-nigma or some other QR program.
